Claude Ultra Plan: Max 20x Becomes Ultra, Five-Hour Cap Gone

Anthropic renamed its Claude $200 plan this week. The Claude Ultra plan replaces Max 20x, and if you paid for Max 20x, you're moved to it automatically. Anthropic's help center says existing subscribers move to Ultra automatically, with no price change.

The name isn't the interesting part. The way your usage is counted changed.

Max 20x sold you a multiple of Pro per five-hour session. Ultra sells you a multiple of Pro per week, and verified accounts lose the five-hour limit entirely.

That's a real shift for anyone who runs Claude Code in long sessions. It also hides a pricing quirk: per dollar, Ultra's weekly usage is no better than Max's. Here's what's actually on the pages, and what isn't.

Quick note if you searched your way here: this is the subscription plan, not Claude Code's /ultraplan planning feature. Different thing, same word.

Claude Ultra Plan: Key Features and Pricing

Here's the lineup as it stands on claude.com/pricing:

PlanPriceUsage
Free$0Limited
Pro$20/mo, or $17/mo billed annually1x
Max$100/mo5x Pro, every 5 hours and every week
Ultra$200/mo10x Pro every week, no 5-hour cap once verified

The Ultra details, straight from Anthropic's Ultra support article:

  • Usage: Get 10 times the Pro plan's usage every week.
  • No five-hour limit: Verified Ultra accounts don't have a five-hour limit. If your account isn't verified yet, a temporary limit applies. Anthropic lifts it automatically once verification goes through.
  • Fable cap: there's a separate weekly limit for Fable models. Anthropic doesn't give a number. Max has the same kind of cap, so this isn't new to Ultra.
  • Billing: monthly only. No annual discount. The $200 is the web price, and mobile pricing may differ.
  • API credits: Ultra includes $200 a month in API credits. Max includes $100.

Claude Max 20x vs Ultra: What Actually Changed

The old Max 20x promised 20 times Pro's usage per five-hour session, with a weekly cap Anthropic never put a number on. Anthropic's old Max pages now redirect, so that wording comes from archived snippets rather than a live page.

The ambiguity mattered. According to a ChannelNews report, a class action filed in September alleged the weekly limits weren't made clear.

Ultra flips the unit. You get 10x Pro measured weekly, and the five-hour wall goes away.

Is 10x weekly less than 20x per session? You can't tell from the public numbers. Anthropic never published the old weekly ratio, so anyone calling this a 50% cut is guessing. What you can say: the weekly ratio is now written down, even if the Fable cap still isn't.

Here's our math.

Max gives you 5x Pro for $100. Ultra gives you 10x Pro weekly for $200. On weekly usage alone, that's the same price per unit of Pro.

So what does the extra $100 actually buy? Two things.

No five-hour cap, and $100 more in API credits. If neither matters to you, Max is the same weekly deal for half the money.

Flip it around and there's a break-even point. If you'd spend at least $200 a month on direct API calls anyway, Ultra's credits cover that, and the upgrade from Max pays for itself.

In that case the missing five-hour cap costs you nothing extra. If you spend nothing on the API, you're paying $100 a month purely for the missing cap.

Claude Ultra Usage Limits: The API Credit Fine Print

The $200 in credits sounds like the plan pays for itself. Read the credits article first.

The credits don't cover interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web. They don't cover Claude on Bedrock, Vertex or Foundry either.

And unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle. Nothing rolls over.

So the credits are for your own API calls. Think scripts, internal tools, a side project hitting the API directly. If you don't build against the API, that $200 quietly disappears every month.

Real-World Use Cases

All-day Claude Code sessions. This is who Ultra is for. If you've hit the Claude five-hour limit mid-refactor and sat waiting for the window to reset, a verified Ultra account removes that interruption. You budget against the week instead.

Builders who also ship API products. You use Claude interactively and you run API workloads. The $200 credit offsets real spend, as long as you use it inside the billing cycle.

Former Max 20x subscribers. You don't need to do anything. The migration is automatic and the price doesn't change. Make sure your account's verified so the temporary cap lifts.

Not for: people who use Claude in bursts and rarely hit a session limit. Max at $100 gives you the same weekly usage per dollar.

Hard Limitations and Flaws

The Fable cap has no number. If Fable is why you're paying $200, you're buying an allowance Anthropic won't size for you.

Weekly budgets can run dry midweek. Removing the five-hour cap means you can burn through your week faster. One heavy agent run on Monday can leave you rationing by Thursday.

Verification is a black box. Unverified accounts get a temporary limit, and Anthropic lifts it automatically once verification goes through. It doesn't publish a timeline, so new subscribers may hit a cap they didn't expect in week one.

No annual option. Pro gets an annual discount. Ultra doesn't. That's $2,400 a year, paid month by month.

Credits are use-it-or-lose-it. Expiring credits push you to spend, not save. That's fine if you have API work queued, and wasted money if you don't.

Verdict: Your Developer Action Plan

If you were on Max 20x, check your usage page this week and look at your weekly number, not the session one. That's the budget that matters now.

If you're on Max and keep hitting the five-hour wall, Ultra is the fix. Just know you're paying $100 extra mainly for that missing wall, since the weekly ratio per dollar is the same.

If you're on Ultra and don't call the API directly, find a use for those credits or accept they're gone each month. Wire one internal script to the API and they'll at least earn their keep.

And watch the industry. OpenAI's help center says Plus, Pro and Business plans will share one token-based allowance across ChatGPT and Codex starting in December.
